When I applied for NADOI membership back in 1980, it was the only professional organization for dog obedience instructors. There were some short-lived groups for trainers and competitors, but nothing stayed around for long, and no group had ever been put together just to serve the interests of instructors and the profession of obedience teachers. NADOI was a pioneer in every sense, from promoting humane methods of training and puppy classes, to promoting the professionalism of instructors. Forty-five years later, it is still working to recognize, certify, and promote the best instructors of dog obedience, and is still the only organization devoted only to instructors.
Today there are other organizations that enroll instructors and trainers. Some also include pet sitters and groomers, boarding kennel owners and dog daycare operators as members. They may accept anyone who wishes to join, regardless of experience, and some offer different levels and categories of membership. Still, after many decades, NADOI is the only professional organization that requires each member to be tested and evaluated by our skilled examiners, and no one is admitted to membership by simply “joining,” or paying dues. Membership in NADOI is earned by one’s accomplishment and experience, and members are required to participate in continuing education as long as they are active, certified members. Because of this testing and continuing education process, and our members’ ability to produce trained dogs and educated owners, NADOI members have the respect of their fellow members, others in the dog professions, and dog owners.
